Tax back on Private Nursing Home fees

Hi, don't know if this has been asked before - couldn't find a thread on it. Have a friend who's mother is in a private nursing home. She and two other siblings are paying the fees of €1500 pm. I understand she can claim tax back on the med 1 form for her contribution but looking at some of the other threads it appears it may be put down as an expense on her P2 form next year as its an ongoing expense. Is it possible to get the tax office to reissue this years credits and include the nursing home fees on it.

Also she is in the higher rate tax bracket and i understood she should get tax back at the 42% rate after the deduction but i have been told by another friend that the budget this year changed this and tax is only given back at 20%.

Also what deduction would be made - she is a single person so would expect €125 deduction before the tax rebate but the nursing home cost are for her mother so would she have to make a family claim???

Finally can somebody confirm how much the dependant relative tax credit is for this year.

Hi,

Thanks for the link. helpful. Still confused about the MED 1 tax relief rate used - Revenue office are saying 42% but somebody else claiming only 20% for this year??

Medical expenses relief is normally at one's marginal rate so a 42% taxpayer gets 42% back on allowable expenses over the relevant limit (€125 or €250).
