If I make an lump AVC pension contribution for 2017 tax year now....

When am I likely to get my tax refund?

Immediately? Or next November after tax return?

You can make your AVC contribution now, file your tax return and obtain your refund. In my experience filing electronically speeds up the refund process. In fact making a pension contribution in this way may require you to file through ROS. In Revenue speak this is referred to as a mandatory ROS filer.

But if you make the AVC investment in 2018, I think you must claim it first in 2018. Any excess unclaimed in 2018 can be backdated for claim in 2017. I suggest you check that out.

If you make the payment and the claim before 31/10/2018 you can claim the contribution in your 2017 return.
