Hiya,

Just wondering if anyone can help me, I was made redundant in September 09 and I'm just wondering is it possible for me to claim tax back?
I thought I would be working by now and that when I started in a new job whatever was owed to me would be refunded in my pay but I've been told that doesn't happen if it goes into a new tax year. Also how do I claim tax back as I've never done it before?

Thank you in advance.

I've been through the exact situation that you have:).

The way I did it was registered for PAYE anytime and then requested a balancing P21 statement for that year. Apart from the statement you'll also get a cheque based on whatever tax your due back that year (it can also go back the opposite way if you erm owe them tax).

I think you can also get the refund paid directly into your bank account if you supply bank details to the service.

Of course you can always ring up Revenue with your PPS no. and ask for a P21 balancing statement though registering for PAYE anytime could be handy for future use as well.

Also, make absolutely sure you avail of all tax reliefs to which you are entitled for the year e.g. unreimbursed medical expenses, trade union subs, bin charges etc and as Sue Ellen rightly points out, if you received a redundancy payment on which you paid PAYE, make sure a top slicing calculation is carried out.
