When a couple get married either in church or register office is Revenue automatically informed about their change in status or is it the responsibility of the individuals to notify Revenue? I presume it is the couple's decision whether or not they wish to be treated jointly or individually for tax purposes but am not 100% certain??

Joint assessment is the option that benefits most couples. Under joint assessment you are chargeable to tax on your combined total income.

This is the option that is applied when you notify us that you are married or in a civil partnership. This does not prevent you from choosing the other options of separate assessment or separate treatment.

You can update your civil status and request joint assessment through ‘Manage My Record’ or ‘My Profile’ in myAccount. You can also upload any supporting documentation. Your spouse will be required to confirm the request by signing into myAccount and confirming the status update.

Absolutely no chance of Revenue being informed!!

The tax system is called self assessed for a reason. Its up to You to correctly inform Revenue, to pay correct amount. Overpaying Revenue, they don't mind at all if you don't claim your correct allowances e.g. Joint assessed or both taxed as individuals, you need to do your own homework.
That said its not complicated and well worth time.

Thanks guys for your replies. It will require careful consideration but as you say, fidelcastro, well worth the time and effort.
