tarmac depth for driveway

HI All,

I am getting my driveway done soon and have gotten a few quotes. One quote is for 2 inch SMA and I was wondering if this is deep enough? The contractor came recommended by some friends of mine and they do a good job.

My main concern is that I have a wood pellet boiler so will have a lorry delivering pellets about twice a year and the driveway is quite steep.

Cheers,

You could of course tell the contractor what sort of loading the drive will get and ask his advice.

Preparation of the substrate was essential for the 100mm of 65kn concrete I put on 75mm compacted hardcore on tamped and filled good subsoil with a 1:10 fall, so for a 50mm skim of tarmac on a steep slope I'd imagine its very important.

I have seen tarmac "settle" and "creep" when used in situations where it wasn't appropriate and I'd ask to see examples of the contractor's work in similar situations and go and see them.

Only then, having spoken to the owner, would I even think of proceeding, with the same preparation, if the ground conditions and exposure are similar.
