Strike at work

Notice of strike action has been served by one of the unions in my workplace (IMPACT). Some employees are members of SIPTU and some are not members of a union at all.

My question is, what does a non-union member do on strike day? Is it usual to take unpaid leave/holidays on this day?
If SIPTU does not call for a strike on the same day do SIPTU workers have to work?

Thanks ... new to all this

SIPTU memebrs should contact their own union on what to do.

I 'm IMPACT managment/admin HSE. A few years ago the IMPACT Allied Health Professional were on strike. We were informed by IMPACT that it was in order to pass the picket.

Non - union members shoud ask management.

well since you ask i think you should work

there are plenty that would be happy with the job

General ICTU guidelines are that members of other unions should attend as normal, but not do the work of their colleagues who are on strike.

In the recent CPSU strike, non-members could turn up as normal, or if they didn't turn up, they were docked a days pay (they took the day off in our case)

Thanks for all the replies ... as it happens all primary schools will be on strike that day too ... so even if I wanted to work I would have to take a day of holidays/unpaid leave to look after my children.
