Stopping wild cats trying to get in upstairs windows.

Was woken up in the middle of the night last night when a cat tried to get in our bedroom window (upstairs). We heard the blind move (and maybe a thud on the window) and both woke up and saw a silhouette at the top of the window so let a few roars out of us. It gave us both the fright of our life.

Now we dont own a cat and there a quite a few wild ones around the back of our house. The window sill is easy enough to get on to from an extension beside it but the part of the window that was open was only a small bit at the top and that is a bout 2 or 3 feet above the sil.

This has never happened before, i dread to think what would have happened if it got in and we couldnt get it out again as our window only opens at the top a little bit.

Any ideas how to stop it trying to get in again? I hate sleeping with windows closed but am now a bit wary to leave it open.

It is probably just a one off. A cat came in my bathroom window in the middle of the night some years ago and I just let it out the front door.

It hadn't happened before and it has not happened since.

So, I would not worry too much about it.

I know you're right Brendan but it gave me such a fright in the middle of the night i was hoping there was a way of discouraging cats from trying my window (without closing it ) as there is plenty of other windows that are as easy if not easier to get into.

Maybe put a container of water on your windowsill with a bit of lemon juice added - apparently cats don't like lemon juice, and they certainly don't like getting wet!

Probably a one off as others pointed out.

Put the window on the setting nearest to closed. That way you will have some ventilation but the cat will not be able to fit in on this setting.

There was another thread here for keeping cats out of gardens you could probably try them - if i remember correctly it usually came back to the lemon scent, wetting them with a water pistol or getting other male cat pee to scare them off as they don't like the scent of another male cat in the area.

If problem persists, try prikka strips.

Happened in our home once, Came home to find the cat having a nice nap on my bed. Only did it the once though!

Thanks all. I will try a few of those suggestions starting with lemon juice and hope it dosent happen again, if it does prikka strips look exactly like what is needed..

I hate cats but that is a whole other post!!

As others have said, wouldn't worry about it - you probably gave the cat as much if not more of a fright than it gave you.

It is very unlikely that the cat will come near your window again, so the lemon juice is irrelevant.

Fair point, maybe it is more for my peace of mind then....
