stonework question

I have just put in a foundation for a 40 metre stone wall. My intention is to put in just one row of stone on blockwork. However Im wondering what needs to be done regarding blockwork and the pillars-i.e I will be putting in 4" blocks on the side with ties for the stone to 1metre height the length of the wall but do I need blocks at all when it come to the pillars

I would put in piers and dont forget to leave expansion joints

Sorry, My question wasnt clear. I am putting in piers for definite. But do I need blocks here also?
