stone effect panels, what are they like

Currently looking for ideas to clad a retaining wall I have (40m long 1.2m high). Don't want a plaster finish. I have a certain amount of Liscannor stone on my house, but to continue this to the wall would be quite expensive (ie ~€140/m2 labour and stone).

There's plastic/composite fake stone effect panels out there, that I know nothing about, and am wondering if this is a much cheaper option? Not sure whether it would look out of place.

Anyone any experience of these systems?
 
you can get real stone cladding for around 50 euros/sq meter, i would recommend Tom doyle supplies in camolin in wexford, very good service and great price, happy customer and no relation to the business
 
A more detailed explanation of why you personally consider them "awful" might help...
 
would love to know aswell whats awful about them, it is real stone, the best thing about them is that you dont need to upgrade your foundations to take a stone front and also with the speed of installation, there is great cost savings to be made and you still get the exact same look, we saved over 10K going this route!!!!

I have viewed the brochure...and yes the stone does give a natural look because the stone is real however I feel it does not give the natural shape to the stone as all the panels on the brochure seem to show the stone cut to slotted shapes.

Pesonally I would not use it on my house because I would prefer natural shapes to stone faces on a dry stone wall.

To answer the OP's question....well it would depend on whether the stonework used already is a dry stone wall, or visible mortar jointed stone wall, natural stone face shapes or cut slotted stone face. Definitely the supplier above is worth a visit if using it to stone face walls.

Perhaps someone could tell me if there is a similar supplier in the munster area
 
there brochure and online site are out of date, they have a new selection, the stone i choose was a yellow sandstone and it does hae the natural profiles of the stone, i'm based towards kerry and found these the only supplier of cladding that looked the most natural, you really have to make the journey up, i do know that they are sppling stone to a development in kinsale and one in kilarney, so you might be able to see the new range there
 
Manor Stone do these too, we got dropped off some samples.

One advantage is that these look like the "long flat"-type of stone wall which is more expensive.

One disadvantage is that the panels are quite small, about a b-sized, so the joins may be noticeable.

For us, I don't think we'd use them on a house but they are in pole position to be used on the front wall!

From what I have seen over here, the fixing of the cladding leaves a lot to be desired. It appears to be the case that the fixing to the base material deteriorates after a relatively short time (5 to 10 years) and the joints fail.
 
Ask to see the panels in situ on a house or wall to get the real effect. My personal opinion is that they don't look like the real thing. For some people that's fine though.

SSE could you clsrify...the joints are either noticeable or not...have you seen them insitu...ie. have you seen them on a finished wall.

Agree with your second point.
 

Have you used yellow sandstone on your house, if so I would be interested to see some photos...especially with the natural profile shape of the stone?
Is it a dry stone wall?

I have it ordered and waiting delivery, in about 4 weeks time hopefully it will be on, if you want to see it on a wall, S&N Granite have there entrance walls done in it, they are based in camolin aswell, the joints shouldn't be noticable if installed properlly..mine is a drystone look..
 
You can get a company in Mitchelstown to put a plaster effect on your wall and they make it look like any kind of stone you want. Its the same material they use to make the fancy rocks and stuff in las vegas and euro disney etc. I think they're called stone fx or something
