State pension - parents told not entitled

Hi

My dad is 85 and my mother is 73. My mother never worked after she got married in 1963 (age 27) so she has almost no stamps (part of her work time was spent in Italy and the UK), my dad had his own business which he took over from his dad. He did put money into a pension plan but it was not attached to inflationary increases so its pretty small and getting smaller relative to expenditure. They were told a few years ago they were entitled to nothing. Is this true as i know that things are getting tight for them now. They feel that theres no point in re-checking with pensions board so I said I'd try to find out myself.

Many thanks

Re: STATE PENSION- parents told not entitled?!

I'm not sure about an Irish pension but I know my Mother who worked for a few years in England before getting married is getting a very small pension from the U.K.. Hers is less than £10 a week but is still worth getting. Espically if you could get it backdated.

Re: STATE PENSION- parents told not entitled?!

It's possible that your parents failed a means test for (what was called) Non-Contributory Old Age Pension some years ago - if there were savings, or other assets from the business at the time.

It might be worth applying again as the criteria for qualifying may have changed since they applied and they may have an entitlement.

Here's the link to the information on State Pension (non-contributory) which may be useful.

Re: STATE PENSION- parents told not entitled?!

I assume they both have their medical cards and Household Benefits (Electricity Phone & T.V.) and free travel, if not apply immediately.

As gipimann has stated apply for the Non-Contributory State Pension even if they are not entitled to a full rate of pension they may be entitled to a portion of it

Thanks for the advice. Can i ask if they would be entitled to back payments if it was reviewed?

I would assume so. As I mentioned on another thread at least two of my uncles who emigrated to North America years ago (and remain living there) only discovered recently that they qualified for PRSI linked Irish state pensions and all outstanding payments were backdated.
