We have bought a Stanley Grainne solid fuel stove with a back boiler.
Would anyone know what is the most cost effective way of making the hearth i.e. stone, granite, tiles. granite seems to be very expensive option for this.

We used tiles because the rest of the sitting room is tiled.

They're so easy to keep clean.

mosstown, it was about 2 inches thick I'd say. cost about 1/2 the price of granite. Apparently you can soak boiled linseed oil into it to darken it but we've yet to do so

thanks galleyslave, that sounds an interesting option which I will look into. I did price two pieces of granite for this job - ie one for the back tongue and then the piece at front of stove - was quoted £650 sterling for cash here in the UK ! - i am sure it would look great but that's just too much for such a small area or maybe i am not being realistic. one piece is 1832 x 500 and the other piece is 892 x 465. i know it is a large enough area to cover so dont know !

seems a lot alright, thats what, about 5 feet by 2? for the larger... I think I paid 150 or so ? Can't recall exactly.

Woodbine - did you use normal floor tiles under the stove ? Would they not crack with the intense heat ? I have seen some lovely reclaimed quarry tiles here in the Uk about 2.5 inches thick which would look good too.

Hi mosstown.

the tiles are ordinary floor tiles and are bearing up well, considering the heat. No sign of cracking yet and they've been there for three years now.

they were one of the cheaper tiles in the shop we bought them, although price wasn't the deciding factor. We agreed that we'd go to the shop and choose our favourite and it just happened that we chose the same tile. (just as well! :D)

thanks woodbine, i am currently looking at some lovely 20mm thick 6x6 quarry tiles with are very warm looking and lovely mix of red and brown through them.
