Squaring off a chimney breast

We are hoping to do some work on the mid terrace house we bought three years ago, including squaring off the chimney breast in the sitting room. As the original dividing wall was moved the chimney now juts into the room in the shape of a cheese wedge. It makes the room an odd shape and isolates visitors sitting at that end of the room.

I was wondering if anyone has had this done and how difficult and costly it would be.

Many thanks
K

Everything is possible, but the cost of removing the chimney stack from top to bottom with the consequent roof replacement over the aperture, the plastering and redecoration of each room that the flue passes through etc will be both costly and less than simple.

But it can be done - you need to seek advice from a structural engineer and a construction company.

Hi there,
We did that. We did a total renovation and cut back the chimney. It was a cottage and no extra support needed to support the chimney above. Some work was needed on the chimney flue - we had to put in a new gathering hood - I think extra work on the flue etc came in around 1k. It was extremely messy but didn't matter as it was totally gutted. We were delighted we cut it back though, it looks perfect! Best of luck

Thanks for the replies, the chimney upstairs is square so hopefully only the sitting room one will have to be redone.
