Tonight I've killed two very large black, long legged spiders and I want to know if there is any way of keeping them out of the house? I'm scared to death of them and don't like having to go after them but couldn't relax if I didn't make sure they were dead. Even now I find myself looking out for others. Is there anything I can buy to keep them away? Thanks.

OMG, don't kill them, wait until the relatives come to the funeral!!

First, check your fireplace for webs, get rid of them..................

Use a glass to catch the spiders and then dump them out on a green or roadside.

They come in for the heat at this time of year..after last winter who can blame em:D

I got one of these last year and its brilliant for removing them and even bluebottles etc even from the ceiling. Only €10 in woodies. I just put em out the garden.

Hi Scary Martha Barry :D

Welcome to AAM.

There are many on spiders here so you might get some advice from those.

Irish spiders are completely harmless. Like monagt I use a glass to shift em. I find them fascinating, spiderweb has more strength and flexiblity than steel. Despite all our technology, we can't reproduce anything like it. I have a spiderball in the garden, just a bit smaller than a golf ball. You can see all the baby spiders inside, but it's waterproof, how cool is that? I have a web too between two large plants at quite a distance (4 feet), I have no idea of how the spider managed to make this connection.

Spiders are really incredible little creatures, we should be more intrigued by them than afraid. My mother used to repeat that ditty, "if you want to live and thrive, let the spider run alive..." I wonder who came up with this and why?

Thanks for the replies although I couldn't possibly go near a spider of that size with a glass or indeed that apparatus suggested previously---I use the hoover. Havn't seen any since although I'm sure I will. It's really something to repel them I need, keep them out in the first place--then nobody need die. Any further suggestions appreciated.

my wife is the most ruthless vicious spider killer ever. she has a phobia about them and wont stay in the same building as one, somehow she has adapted to be able to kill them with a shoe. I try to save them before her and chuck them out the window alive. as a child I used to feed the odd housefly to the spiders in the garden, they enjoyed the meals obviously. i would do this today if the chance arose, maybe Freud material!

My mother hoovers them up. But following on a joky comment from one of my brothers, she then stuffs the hoover nozzle with tissues. Just in case.
