Anyone know anywhere I can buy sparking vodka in Dublin? I've read great things about Cosmos made with it but if I ask in an off licence people look at me like I've got two heads!

As someone who loves vodka this is wrong.....its along the same lines as someone saying Smirnoff is quality vodka

Or even worse Huzzar or Boru

I'm a Stolichnya, Absolut and Grey Goose fan myself but sparkling vodka is big in the US and all the magazines were raving about it when I was over last month. Didn't get to a liquor store and of course there was none in the airport so trying here.

O2 wasn't the brand I'd heard of but apparently there are several. Camitz was the particular one I'd seen mentioned in articles.

I would drink the odd Smirnoff, mainly because its the one thats seen in most bars.

What would you recommend if I was to buy a bottle?

There is a blade of grass in it. Not flavoured. My spelling is awful. Its in Tesco.

Starka is also good. Its flavoured !

Grey Goose is the queen of Vodkas, best bought in the US at $30 a litre compared to €45 for 700ml here!

yep bison vodka is quality stuff alright. sparkling vodka sounds interesting tough, think ill be on the look out for it.

Apart from some of the flavoured vodkas I've never understood (aside from the really rough cheap options) how a vodka can be 'quality'.

They all taste pretty much exactly the same to me - the closest thing to flavourless alcohol you can get.

To my shame (and to make a point) I also once slyly supplied cheapo vodka to a polish associate (who claimed to be able to discern endless nuances/quality etc) and he was none the wiser.

Quality vodka has no after taste and can be drank straight.

Try smirnoff or the like straight and then try bison......then you'll know the difference ( chilled is always better )

Great vodka bars in the UK called Revolution. All types, flavours, and colours !

Mythbusters or whatever that programme on Sky with the guy in the Beret and moustache doing sciency things on urban myths is called - anyway they did a programme on vodka myths. One being that cheap vodka filtered a number of times tastes the same as premium vodkas. Their taste test proved otherwise.

There is a huge difference between cheap and premium vodkas. Cheap ones have nasty aftertastes and even nastier hangovers fpr starters.

Vodka is my drink of choice but if I see Huzzar or Boru behind the bar, it's time for a beer!

Maybe, but I would regard Żubrówka as flavoured - although you seem to think otherwise?

In fact the only palatable Polish vodkas I've had seem to be flavoured in some way - there's another orange coloured one (can't remember name but it translates as something like 'bitter stomach vodka') which was OK.

Re: Grey Goose and the Bison vodka.

I take it then that these are meant to be taken straight, without mixers?

I would drink vodka when out (well at the end of the night anyway), but always with Coke. I was considering buying some quality vodka after reading this thread, but priced Grey Goose in an 'offy' in NI, and it was £23.99

You can see why people buy Smirnoff at £9.99, compared to that price. To be fair, most people buy alcohol to get drunk, not really enjoy the taste. I would love to try one bottle anyway just to see.

Definitely - and 'down in one' too.

Water or apple juice on standby to drink in between shots seems to be a bit of a Polish custom. Much to their amazement, I gulped on my beer in between

Don't grasp the whole 'shot' mentality at all. As far as I can see its just to get drunk as quickly as possible.

Explain the point of spending massive money on a top quality vodka like Grey Goose, if you throw it down your neck in one go, not tasting it at all?

This is totally opposite to the notion of a good quality whiskey, when you sip it to savour its taste.

we had a bottle of bison between 4 of us on the 1st night of my stag. Chilled and straight from the shot glass......oh that warm feeling at the back of the throat, mmmmmm.

Played the wii at the same time which was rather funny.

nothing wrong with mixing bison with a bit of coke, tastes better then smirnoff and coke, so why not. I do enjoy drinking to get drunk, but i may aswell spend an extra fiver on nice quality vodka to make those first few drinks go down all the easier.
