Sound-proofing

Hi everyone,
My builder has just approached me about installing some 'sound-proofing' materials in my new build dormer. It will be in the ceiling between the ground and first floor. Has anyone advice on this and whether it is worth going with? I do plan to carpet the first floor. It is a concrete construction generally.
Thanks.

We had a dormer built and didn't bother with any insulation/soundproofing between floors - but we wish we had ! The noise from upstairs is pretty bad - feet, talking, music (we have 3 teenagers). so I would advise to get some - the basic thermal stuff like rockwooll should provide some sound proofing. Sheeps wool is also good for sound proofing. There are also special sound proofing underlays you can get - not sure where google should help?

Irishlinks,
You could reduce the amount of impact sound (from feet, moving furniture etc) by laying a resilient underlay like Regipol on your existing floors, this would help.

mulberryst is it a concrete house construction or concrete 1st floor?if the 1st floor is timber and you can spare i think about 80mm(i think) you could maybe use the silent 1st floor as used by ijm they claim its quieter than a concrete 1st floor.i think it works by using an air barrier, sound proofing material and another layer of ply or something, you'd need to check it out yourself but an employee of ijm told me it was very good.i've no connection other than knowing someone who works for them
