I have checked other treads on this and although they have given me an idea I am in different situation to the other posters

I would like to install a solid fuel stove which also heats the rads. We currently have nothing in the fireplace ( bigger than average) with a marble mantle and surround. There is a pipe there for connecting to a gas fire . We have gas central heating with 12 rads ( not all in use - prob only 9-10 on when heating is on ) the house is approx 2000sq feet and 4 years old

I know the freestanding stoves are less expensive than the inset ones. I got a price for an inset stove for 2100 ( less 10% disc) I would prefer to go with the inset ones

as i have a young family our heating bills are huge I would like to get an idea of the total cost of installation so I can see what the payback period would be

can anyone help ?

Thanks !

Hi telco if you pay E2000 for something like an arrow inset si40 will heat about 8-10 rads. depends how far the pipewrok is from the appliance a plumer could be anything from 500-600 euro or over a grand depending on what needs to be doen. i would also allow about 150 for flue adapters etc but it depends on the height of your gather hood in the fireplace. Also is your fireplace witha cast insert or granite/marble as it will need to be granite/marble for an inset to be flush aginest it. most plumbers will qauote you for free if you can get them to call.

I don't know if the cost of fuel going forward is an issue but solid fuel appliances no matter what your burning it in can get no where near 60% or 70% efficiency while gas gives you between 90 and 100 % efficiency.

On top of whatever you spend on the stove itself the cost of connecting same to your heating could run up to at least 2k and even more.

Get a quote from a plumber or two before you comit to any particular stove.

have bought a Waterford Stanley Erin stove that heats 9-10 rads but the professionals tell me that it'll easily heat more than that. Bought it in Newry for c.EUR300 less than prices quoted in the South. Prices in the South can vary widely as I believe WS allow different suppliers to offer discounts at different times...
