Solicitors fees for signing over a site

My OH and his sister are having adjoining sites signed over to each of them by their dad and the solicitor is looking for €4000 to do the paperwork. Is this a rip off or is there a standard price for this sort of work?

Total rip off! I got advise from my own solicitor to go with the same solicitor as my father (as they would only have to do the land search once and so it would work out cheaper).
They (in Ennis) still tried to charge me 1,600 (for both sides) including 200 for photocoping/faxing etc, when I queried it and said it was way higher than what my solicitor had priced in Dublin, they asked what I thought would be an acceptable amount - I said 1,000 and they said that would be fine. That is what I paid last Nov or so.
solicitors are also feeling the pinch - tell them you are getting quotes elsewhere or else going to move your business elsewhere after its done. Remember they will be getting more money from you if you get a mortgage in the future.
We went back to our trusty solicitor in Lucan for our mortgage - has never overcharged us yet and been very helpful!

on solicitors fees generally, has anyone recent experience of fees for taking out probate on an estate. From a number of enquiries made, the general scale of fees is one and a half per cent of estate plus vat at twenty one and a half plus outlays. The fees on a straightforward estate 0f 800,000 would be in region of 15000 euro. How on earth can this fee be justified on the amount of work that has to be done, could it be, 12 weeks work for a solicitor at 1000 euro per week. I find it hard to see how the case in question would take three full days work. I am aware that probate may be taken out without engaging a solicitor but because there are others involved ,I would prefer not to take that route. In case I am misunderstood, I am prepared to pay an appropriate professional fee as fair compensation for the service provided.

I've rung around to a few other solicitors since my post yesterday and all were between a quarter and half of the price quoted by the first solicitor for the 2 sites!

So - the moral of the story? Ring around.

However, I would always advise someone to make sure they have a recommendation. Low price is no good to you if someone ( because they are young/ newly qualified/alcoholic/gambling - tick which ever box might apply) makes a hames of it. And sites are a pain - quite apart from anything else, it is quite likely that they will sit in the Land Registry for several years which means the solicitor incurs a cost in keeping the file open until the dealing completes.

Blondie, either do it yourself and save yourself the money or else do as above, ring around as many people as you can to get a more acceptable ( to you) price.
