I am not sure how useful a solicitor is unless you have some legal point to make, which is very unlikely.
A Personal Insolvency Practitioner might be better placed to advise you on your options and to negotiate with the lender.

I would advise you to employ the services of a solicitor, initially at least. This is likely to become a legal matter and an appropriately experienced solicitor could save you a lot of money. There is no certainty that a creditor is legally entitled to succeed in obtaining a shortfall. If there are no legal avenues available then a PIP may be appropriate. Be careful not to put anything in writing to the Fund.
