Hi
Does anyone know what the norm is for a solicitors fee for a personal injury claim. It didnt go to court and was settled with the insurance company without ebing sent to PIAB either. What fees should a solicitor get for this?ot took about 6 months to complete.
Thanks
There is no 'recommended scale' of charges; Some solicitors charge by time. Some will charge a fee based on based on a blend of amount of time spent, value of claim, urgency of matter, complexity of matter etc. It's not an exact science. There is scope for the fee to be reviewed in various ways if you are unhappy, and your solicitor should give you some indication at the outset. Check out the Law Society website for detailed info. www.lawsociety.ie .
For straightforward and relatively minor PIAB cases (e.g. minor whiplash settled before going to PIAB) I would charge my basic minimum fee for a P.I. claim, which is €1400 plus VAT and outlay. This would bring the total bill close enough to €2k. I suspect this is a little lighter than average, but I do not do a lot of this work and would not be an expert on how to charge for it.
