Smears on new slate hearth

I have a new slate hearth which has become smeared. Can anyone recommend how to clean?

Should this have happened if slate had been sealed?
 
There is a marble and slate cleaner out there by PLASPLUGS. Its around 20 euro a litre and available in woodies and the like. It works on slate and marble. Can I ask what sealer you used?

It is a new fireplace and I have presumed that the supplier sealed it before delivery.
