Small Business employes labourers: lay off for several months or make redundant?

We are a small business feeling the affects of the downturn - we are probably have to lay off a few labourers - we hope this is a temporary measure, but are not sure if we are to officially make them redundant, or lay them off for the short term. Can anyone advise?
