Slary reckoning during Parental Leave

Hello there,

I'm currently on parental leave for two children consecutively (28 weeks) and the payslips I am receiving from my employers seems a bit strange.

Instead of not paying me anything, they are adding a full month's salary and then subtracting it again as a deduction entitled 'parental leave'.

What I am concerned about is that my gross pay is still accumulating as if I was being payed, and I think this will make my tax payments incorrect for the year?

As well as that they are not paying me for Bank holidays, which I believe they should?

Hi LBoy,

Maybe someone who operates a payroll package can explain the handling of the salary. I am currently studying employemt law and observe the following from what you have said. You are only entitled to one 14 week parental leave in a 12 month period except by agreement with employer which you obviously must have.

"Employees retain an entitlement to any public holidays falling during a period of parental leave and therefore, a corresponding number of days in lieu of public holidays shall be added to the end of the period of leave, unless they have previously been paid".

A very important point is to make sure that you are credited with PRSI credits for the absent weeks. Normally the employer has to write to DSFA advising of the parental leave however in this case they may be doing it in the manner in which they are handling the payroll. Your payslip will say how many weeks PRSI you have to date from Jan 01.
