ok this is a tough one. don't know where else to seek advise so here goes. Close family member has discovered an ex mate is spreading rumours about him being violent towards her. It is all untrue but its still being spread about the area, work, etc. Whats the best thing to do? Ignore and hope people don't believe it or take legal advice? Would really appreciate any of your experiences, etc. as we are really upset by this. thanks

I would arrange to meet with the person spreading the rumours, or if that isn't possible (i.e. if relations are that bad between the two parties), write a letter to them and ask them to desist from spreading the rumours.

If that fails, go to a solicitor and get them to write a letter to the person threatening legal action for defamation of character, or, depending on what exactly this person is doing, you may be able to make a complaint to Gardai about harrassment.
