Skip Problem

A neighbour of ours has had one of those plastic skips, full of rubbish outside their house now for over four months. Apart from the obvious eyesore, the issue is that the rubbish from the skip (plastic bottles, general litter, etc.) blows around the parking area to the front of the houses. There are no front gardens and the parking area is probably not yet handed over to the council - if it ever will be. This creates a massive litter problem in front of very house - not just theirs.

I am not sure exactly which house put the skip out in the first place. Even if I did know, I don't think I would like to approach the neighbour, as if they didn't have enough respect to remove it by now, it's unlikely they would react postitively to someone pointing this out to them. [Co-incidentally or not, the car parked beside the skip recently had all four of their tyres slashed - I have no idea if this is connected and it cements my view that I don't wish to deal with them.]

Any ideas or advice on how to address this problem? Is there a litter super-police force that can deal with this? I presume the gardai wouldn't be interested.
 
is there a name on the skip of the company who owns it?

I'd phone them and tell them it must be removed.

whenever i've gotten a skip the company will ring after a couple of days to see if they can collect it. i can't understand it being left for four months!!
 
Is there a 'Managing Agent' or 'Management Company' that looks after the common areas/ car parking. If there is, then you should contact them.
 
(1) There is a name and phone number of the skip company. It is probably worth a try to phone them. However, to my knowledge, skip companies never collect without a fee, so I'm not too optimistic about that option.

(2) There is no managment company. However, this has triggered a throught - perhaps there is a developer or trust which ultimately owns the common areas). I'll look in to this.

(3) I'll contact the litter warden and council (and perhaps Dept. of the Environment) to see what they say.

I got a skip bag a while back and they charged me before they dropped it out to me, then collection was "free" (i.e. already paid for). So it might be worth giving the number a ring
 
I think your Litter Warden's the way to go.... As the skip is spreading rubbish everywhere, you need to get rid quickly, and the wardens seem to work pretty quickly...
 
The easiest thing is just ring the skip company. Nowadays they tend to leave the skips uncollected until someone rings in - from my experience. Its advertising for them and they have been paid in advance, so they are in no hurry unless they need the skip.

I just called the skip company. They said that they can't collect the skip without payment. The normal procedure in these cases, according to them, is to contact the local council so that they can send out a litter warden.

So, I'll try that next.....
 
....ok, I called the Litter Warden's office and they have created an incident on their system. The agent who took my call said that because there is an incident raised, someone would now call around to the area and initiate an investigation.

It was interesting to note that there had not been an incident previously raised against this.

If there is any update to this, I'll post again.

Thanks for getting back to us, Bob.... Had an idea that the Litter Warden was the way to go... I find that they are brilliant, and very efficient at getting things like this sorted....

Well whatever you do do not set it alight. Even if you did people would probably just start loading it up again with rubbish. Any skip I ever got (a lot of them) had to be filled real quick before everybody in the county put in their old cooker/fridge/rubbish etc.
 
I didn't find the Litter Wardens any good at all. I had a problem with graffiti in our Dublin City Council area and was eventually put in touch with the Litter warden for the area. He was going on about it not been his business untill I reads him the relelant act then said he would call on the owners to ask them to remove the graffiti. Its still there so I assume he did nothing - do be honest I didn't expect him to, he sounded soo bored. Maybe just waiting for his pension.

A quick update: the skip is finally gone!!

Down to personality perhaps. We dealt with a very good litter warden who had a car removed from our area. It had been parked there for three years and the owner would not/could not move it.
