Our house is about 30 yrs. old and the hall stairs and landing has always been papered. Is it possible /or sensible to skim the walls and render them suitable for painting.

There is no problem in doing this. The paper should be removed insofar as possible sanded and cleaned to leave as level as possible . Your plastering contractor will apply a bonding and skim the walls. It will cost around €10 incl vat excluding the removal of the wallpaper which could be carried out by a general labour to reduce the cost. talk to your palstering contractor about the requirements before commencing any of the works.

Pity I did not know this plastering contractor some time back. Our's took two days for a plasterer and his workman. Even if this plasterer didn't have a guy to mix etc - he would earn €5 per day. On that reckoning it would take him 40 days to earn an i-POD :D.

Do you know how much it would cost to skim an internal room of 15x8ft, after wallpaper has been removed by mysel.
