Single mom in full-time education

Hello all,

can anyone advise if there are payments available to help with childcare for a single mom in full-time education?

My friend intends to reside with her mother when the baby is born but will have to give up college if subsidised childcare is not available as her own mother works full time on a low income. Also, if the father of this child agrees to pay maintenance, does the state also make any payments?

Thanks for any advice,

Tessie

She should also check out whether the college has any subsidised creche facilities for One-Parent Families? Some of them do. Also, she should check out whether she can apply for Back to Education Allowance as a single parent even though she is already on a course. The college might have an Access officer to deal with her queries?

regarding maintenance, if she applies for One-Parent Family, whcih she should do, she is expected to make effoprts to get maintenance adn then this is deducted from her entitlements....not all of it, usually about half, I think.

Thank you Clubman and Welfarite,

your information is very helpful,

Regards,
Tessie

Call 1890 777 121 or contact your local for more info on your entitlements.

Some Student Unions were able to get grants for child care and may provide a refund/subsidy for childcare; worth asking the SU in your college.

Also worth contacting the Childcare Co-ordinator in your local County council - they may have details on community creches and what reduced cost places are available.
