Sick Pay through Employer versus Sick Pay through the Social Welfare

I have an employee who has been out sick for over 12 months now. I'm just wondering what is the state of play with him staying out. He is submitting doctors certs to us.

What is the difference in money to him with submitting doctors cert to us and social welfare versus handing in notice and dealing with social welfare alone???

My gut feeling is that this employee is not going to return to us so I just want to check out if it's proving to be more beneficial to them to stay with the company (and costing us money)instead of giving in notice.

What does his contract say about sick pay?

Surely , you are not still paying him sick pay , after 12 months .
He would obviously have been to a referee SW doctir after around 6 months , so he must be genuinely unfit for work.

The chances are that if he hands in his notice and leaves , he will probably remain on long-term disability benefit. This is not assessed like the SW Jobseekers Benefit , so as long as he continues to pass through the Social Welfare doctor , he can remain on disability .
