Hi,

Quick question, I earned less then 3k during 2009 so i am exempt from paying class s prsi because of low earnings. However on my preliminary tax do you think I should pay the minimum prsi of e-253 for 2010? My earning are probably not going to exceed 3k by the end of this year either so I should not have any reason to pay it. Someone said to me I should pay it anyway...

I am on back to work enterprise allowance which I rely on as a source of income but which is non taxable.

Thanks you

I would return at nil and do tax comp next february. If over the 3k them send off a cheque for the 253

Think of it this way: €253 a year now buys a weekly pension of €230 ish a week in the future. Yes, there are uncertainties, as with any "investment", but definitely keep up your Prsi contributions.

Thanks for the replies!

If I pay the 253 and end up not earning over 3k for 2010 can I claim that 253 back?

I'm not really worrying about my pension right now, it's my domestic bills I'm worried about paying:).. If I don't have to pay something I'd rather not then.

The point is to pay the €253 and NOT claim it back with a view to preserving your entitlement to a State pension.
