Hi there,

I am completely new to shares but would like to take a chance and buy 1K in shares (not a lot I know but its a start) will sell again in a few months time hopefully at a profit, where would the cheapest place to do this, I have heard of Sharewatch, it charges 50Euro per trade, is that 50 to buy and 50 to sell, is this the cheapest option available for this type of thing ? Would I be better off keeping my money on deposit, the credit union only gives 3% interest though ....

any opinions ???

You really need to do some reading/research on investing.

1. Investing over such a short term carries a high risk.
2. Short term gains can be wiped out by buying and selling costs.
3. €1,000 is a very small amount if you want to have a diversified portfolio.
4. There are many other banks offering over twice in interest as much as your Credit Union.
5. Why are you investing when you are also appear to be shopping for a loan?

If you really want to 'take a chance' and can afford, say, a 50% fall in the value of your investment in 6 months time then go for it. But do you have idea how you are going to pick your shares?

(Note that individual shares may not be discussed on Askaboutmoney)

Yeah I do need to do some research but where is the best place to do it, I have had a look at amazon for literature about shares but they seem to be UK / US authors, could you recommend an Irish author ?

Why do you feel you need an Irish author?

The principles of investing are the same no matter where. Taxes may distort the picture somewhat, but not materially. Even then, many books will be written for a global audience.

Here's a thread on books about investing.

Here's a thread on the cheapest Irish stockbrokers.

Some good advice in this thread.

There are many other threads that you should read before finalising your decision. Play around with the search function.

thanks,

I read another reply from you today but it seems to have dissappeared from this thread ?? anyhow I have ordered 2 of the recommended books on investing and will have a read to see if it all makes more sense to me for future reference.

From what i have read on these discussions Sharewatch seems to be the best option for a once off trade so I think I will see how i go with them ...

I buy shares using Campbell O'Connor & Co
http://www.camocon.ie/charges.html
For small amounts around €1000 they are the cheapest.A lot of the others have additional annual management fees. But Campbell O'Connor & Co you just set up an account with them. Your first purchase I believe you have to give the money up front, but after that you can ring them up & they will buy the shares for you immediately & will send you your invoice aling with the settlement date.

Fool is not bad for a guide, it also has discussion boards.IMHO it has lost some of it's soul & seems to have more advertisements than advice.

Their main direction is picking stocks that rise in value and give a high dividend. Some of this is subsciption.
