septic tank v treatment center - legislation

hi all,

i have heard a rumour about new legislation being proposed that alll new & existing septic tanks will be replaced with treatment centers (bison unit/puraflow) over the next few years, that in ind is there any point constructing a septic tank for my new build?

what is the approx cost difference?

theres a move to have all septic tanks assessed for performance by local authorities, announced by MEHLG Gormley recently.

the resultant action will be based on how well your system works.

If you are building now, use an efflent treatment system.

prices differences compared to an installed septic tank are from about €1500 upwards. Puraflo is one of the dearer choices, bison from EPS is one of the cheapest... shop around.
 
Can I jump in and say that Biocyle is a good system with agreement certificates for their sand polishing filter system which gives excellent results according to one engineering firm I have worked with recently. It costs significantly more than others but delivers the goods... or the very clean effluent. It may be considered for use on difficult or restricted sites, site with adjoining ditches or streams or sites near an SAC where other systems have been refused. In that sense it more than justifies the additional cost of installation.

just a quick note, my brother and I both built houses at the same time next to each other, the only difference was that I sent my planning/building application into the council in dec 06and he sent his in jan 07, both plans showed septic tanks on them , mine was approved but my brothers was not and advised to get a treatment system (which he has)
if the planned legislation is to go ahead then obviously we are going to have to pay out again to have our septic tank removed and the new system installed!
Would that be right?

i have only one quote back at the moment for the puraflo and its is dear, but there are also stating that it works in conjunction with a septic tank, so overall its alot more expensive than the €1500 suggested
1) i have to install a septic tank anyways,
2) there is a running cost as power for an pump and alarm (electrician also required)
3) pump = moving parts likely to cause problems in the future
4) filter material has to be replaced every 10-12 yrs

i understand bison is cheaper ( i await the quote)

My trial hole test states i may use a septic tank, if i propose that in my planning application - do i have to stick rigidly to it, (in other if i decide at construction stage to switch over to effluent treatment center, will i be in bother?)
 

the bison system will come in around €3700.... maybe a little dearer if you have to pump up to a percolation area.

the puraflo system is one of the dearest, especially as it requires a ST as well. Born na mona do a 'stand alone' system called the 'platinum' which would work out cheaper than the puraflo.

What does your plannig application conditions state??? thats what will determine what you can use, not the perc test report.
