Self Employed in Construction:want to employ apprentice but overheads are high?

Just looking for some advice on how to further my buisiness Im self employed in the construction trade.

I did ok last year but want to take on an apprentice.

Im a sole trader 4 year now.

Trouble is my income is getting eaten up with vat, income tax, insurance, van, phone etc.

If i include all these overheads on a quote id never get a job.

So how can people afford apprentices?
