Self employed consultancy work

Hi all

I'm looking for advice on the following; I'm currently not working (at home wih small child) and have been approached to do some training work. I'm now considering doing some training/consultancy on a casual basis. My main reason for doing this is to "keep my hand in" the workplace and to keep my skills current, the money I earn will be nice however. I suppose my questions are:
Do I have to set up a business to do this?
Where can I get advice for doing this?
I am looking into doing a course in training, can I reclaim the cost of the course as expenses?

It depends on your clients. If they are happy to deal with sole trader contractors, then do that. Many seem not to be, in which case a limited company route of some sort would be required. (Not my bag).

Where can I get advice for doing this?
Here! An accountant that is used to dealing with self-employed people should be enough if you are a sole trader and it's not huge business.

Almost certainly. Also keep track of any other expense you have in setup (computer, stationery, advertising, postage, phone, electricity). Your accountant will be able to give you full advice, but until you get one, start keeping all bills!

Think about the cost of professional indemnity insurance before you begin. This can be prohibitive in certain areas for just doing a small amount of work.

Was wondering that myself, should I have PI insurance if i am providing training?
