seeking a seriously light laptop

I'm looking for a seriously light laptop - weight is no. 1 criterion as I have a bad back and need to travel with it from time to time - regardless of wheels etc there are always places without lifts etc where its necessary to climb stairs lugging the laptop.
I use it for basic stuff: internet access, emails, word and powerpoint etc. at the moment I use a Dell inspiron 510m and it feels like a ton weight even though it was marketed as being especially light!!
Thanks for any advice. BTW money is an object but since its no use to me if I can't carry it easily I suppose I have to put up with the cost........
 
Some of the Sony Vaios are very light. I also understand there's a new super-duper ultra-thin MacBook out or coming out soon???
 
the macbook air isn't actually that light - there is a lighter vaio and a tosh for starters.
 
You'd be amazed the difference a good backpack will make to a shoulder-toted machine.

Super-portables will require you to make various compromises - size of screen, CPU speed, optical drive, number of USB ports. Remember, if you decide to go PC, you may have no other choice than Vista.:(

I have looked up the weight of the Mac air and its is 1.36kg - I wonder is there anything even lighter out there.

Also never having had a Mac before and not being v tech savvy I am a bit intimidated - I've had horrible trouble with my Ipod compared with my creative zen and that has put me off apple products.

BTW - I brought a special backpack for my laptop on a previous trip but it didn't help at all - the problem is lifting any weight (laptops or bottles of wine in the supermarket!) causes back problems and I can feel sciatic pain down my legs within minutes!
 
Google for reviews of ultraportables and see what might be available locally (better still buy in the US if you are visiting any time soon) and would suit your specific needs. A colleague has a Sony Vaio TX1 (?) and it's a nice piece of ultraportable kit.

My Wife bought a 12" Philips from PCWorld in the North and it's lovely. Light and easy to carry yet does what it says on the tin.


However, iIf lifting a bottle of wine causes pain I'd see a specialist !!

The Sony Vaio TX series weigh about 1.2KG - I think that's about as light as you'll get while still being a pc with a keyboard.
 
Asus have a 1kg ultraportable - their U1F model - screen is 11 inches
