Secondary school teaching (woodwork, IT)

Hello all,

I am wondering does anyone out there have any information or advice as to how I might be able to become a teacher in a secondary school with my current qualifications.

Teaching is something I was always interested in doing but never pursued. Information technology was the sector to get involved in when I completed my Leaving certificate. I pursued this and achieved a 2nd class honours degree in Information Technology for business. Following my career I worked in Tech support, Internet/Intranet developement and hosting along with numerous other areas in the IT sector.
Work got hard to come by a few years later as there was a hugh slump in the IT sector. Work would have been available if I travelled but this was not an option for me as I am a single parent and my son comes first. I ended up getting a job out of desperation with a local building contractor. After sometime I decided to do a carpentry apprenticeship which I thoroughly enjoyed. Today I am one of the lucky ones who still has work in construction as the whole building sector is now at an all time low.

I need some security in my life and would like the opportunity to be able to teach at secondary level or third level.

-Is it true that there now is a subject in secondary school called Woodwork Technology?

-Would it be possible for me to teach at secondary level with my current qualifications and if not what other qualifications would I need?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

You may be able to get a temp position with your qualifications but you will need a higher diploma in Education in order to get a full time permanent position. There are a few colleges that do these eg Limerick, Maynooth. You will have missed the deadline for this year. Now is a time to get looking and be in a position to apply for starting Sept 2009. It is a one yr course. Also you might try and get teaching practice between now and end of Dec as applications go in after that and it helps with points if you have teaching practice.
