My laptop is a compaq nc6000, about 4 years old

Will it take a SATA hard drive ? (I want to upgrade)

I haven't got a clue what hard drive type I've got, it's a 40gb.
Its the one which came with the laptop, I guess its IDE, but could be wrong.

Anybody know if SATA will work with my laptop ?

If you want to upgrade rather then replace due to fault issues, Id suggest getting an external USB hard drive. Lot less hassle, you can get 500gb externals for around the 90e mark if you shop around on the net.

Judging by the specs [broken link removed] it's ATA-5 which means Parallel ATA (PATA) and not Serial ATA (SATA). If you want a replacement internal drive and car's suggestion is no use to you then you need a PATA drive. If you haven't a clue about these matters then you should get somebody who does to source and install the replacement drive.

That would be a bulky 3.5" drive which needs external power. You can external 2.5" drives which are USB powered which might be more useful with a laptop as they are more portable, lighter, smaller etc. Of course most mobile is just replacing the internal drive. You could use the old drive as a external backup.
