Salt to stop slipping

I saw someone pouring table salt on their driveway to prevent slipping. Would that work?

Will do, quantity needed will depend on how much snow and ice there is. It would possibly be better to clear as much first then lay the salt. Other things that will also work:

Dishwasher salt
Ash
Cat Litter

I used the dishwasher salt on Saturday and even after this week (and yesterday) our front is still clear.
 
I ran out of table salt so used a container of chilli flavoured salt on the icy slabs outside the front door. It was clear within seconds.
 
We used table salt and it worked. Had to splash out on Saxa though - the Aldi/Lidl stuff was sold out near us.
 
Thanks guys I never knew that ordionary salt would work, in fact i was concerned this would look like a troll
 
Dishwasher salt cleared my front step & the icy tyre tracks in my drive today...
 
What sort of temperatures do have over there? Here in the English Midlands it was
- 8 when I started the car this morning at about 10.00. (I usually wait for the streets to be aired before I venture out in the winter.)
Last night in Oxfordshire it was - 17 and the forecast suggests that it could be colder tonight.
 
Carlow ( midlands ) reached -12 last night , coldest in country. Dublin was around -5 , i think -8 forecast for tonight

Actually what it is doing is a chemical reaction. It lowers the melting point of water to it's Cryoscopic point, which means is that it lowers the freezing point from 0 degrees C to -1.86 degrees C mol kg-1). This process is called freezing point depression.

salt reacts with ice and melts it ...
grit /e.g. even ashes from the fireplace/ provides you with a grip on the road or pavement so that you don't slip ...
on the continent, they'd use a mix of both in winter ... salt is usually dyed orange and it isn't considered good for the environment ...
grit is a major pain in the ass to clean up after the winter ..
