Salary Information Private

Hi, can someone tell me if my salary information is private. My boss reviled my salary to other staff that report to me in our private ltd company. I want to be able to go back and tell him that information is private and not to disclose it to anyone as it forms part of my contract of employment. Can anyone advise? What about Data protection. Can my salary be disclosed to any third party.
I'm worried it was deliberate to turn people against me. if they think I earn to much it will hamper working relationships.
Thanks

Seems a bit of a strange approach, though I'm not aware of any particular legal obligations. It might be worth consulting with the Data Protection Commissioner to see if they breached that legislation.

Was this done in writing or in conversation? Have you approached your boss to see what was going on?

Difficult to say from the information you've provided. Some companies have set salary scales which are known to all employees - if you work for one of these, then your salary is not confidential. Also, if your job was originally advertised with a salary, then its public knowledge.

There will always be cases where it's necessary for others to know your salary - accounts, payroll, hr, to name a few.
It's also necessary in some jobs, for costing jobs etc.
I'm not aware of any leglislation around keeping salaries confidential.

It does seem very strange. Even if it’s not illegal it’s very disrespectful. I would let your boss know that you consider it private and do not want it disclosed again.

I am reminded of the new employee who received a note from the Boss with his first pay cheque to the effect that he should keep his salary details confidential.

He replied promptly with a note: "don't worry - I'm just as embarrassed about it as you are".

Whatever about a general principle, there may be justification, on a case-by-case basis, for keeping salary details private; This seems to be one of those cases where it would have been more proper for the employer to maintain privacy..
