Rules for Burning Leaves

Hi there,

I have a small garden Incinerator, basically a small metal bin with holes in the side for air flow and a lid with a chimney.

I want to burn some of the leaves that have been falling into my garden and also a bush that I plan to get rid of.

Does anyone know the rules for this type of thing, e.g. do I need get permission?, what time of day can it be done?, do I need to inform neighbours? etc etc.

I bought one of these incinerator bins a couple of years ago. As he was taking our money the salesman informed us it was illegal to use it. Not quite believing him, we took it home anyway......it makes a nice coal bunker!!

As far as I know you can't use them at all but I would be happy to be corrected.
 
Instead of burning the leaves (which would be smokey and bad for the environment) why not make a compost heap with them. Rotted leaves make great compost for flower beds.
 
Thanks but i'm not interested in building up a pile of rotting compost in my garden. I really won't use it and it will just be an eye sore.

Many of the neighbours around here dump their non-combustible rubbish in the bog (first removing incriminating evidence). The rest they burn in their range or stove. The stench of burning chemicals can be quite overpowering sometimes.

It really depends on your environmental conscience whether you should use it or not. The law doesn't seem to be enforced, so that's not really an issue.

That's the problem. It's clear that burning leaves/ rubbish etc contravenes the Air Pollution Act 1987( in brief from the [broken link removed]). I have reported the same people several times to my local county council with photographic evidence, confronted the perpetrators myself, contacted the epa and the guards but all to no avail - too much hassle - they don't want to be dealing with Pavee Point.

thats what I'd do galleryman.

It is illegal to burn waste - though I've never heard of anyone being prosecuted for doing it. I have heard of councils issuing warings though

I think I will put in a call to my county council and ask them directly. I'll let you know what they say.
 
According to my mother you can burn twice a year, bonfire night and a night in June and I allways believe her.

Bonfire night is the 23rd of june that's only one night. It is legal to burn [FONT=&quot]Vegetation[/FONT] but you have to notify your local fire station a day before so that you won't have to pay €1300 if someone calls them out to a fire on your property.
 
This sort of thing gets to me. People go ape about incinerators being built near them and then go and burn things in smokey fires in their back yard.

Driving past Duleek a few months ago, I was amazed by a huge dirty pall of smoke caused by one such fire. What amazed me was the lack anyone protesting against this blatant pollution in the same village they oppose a properly run incinerator.

A nasty mix of stupidity and hypocrisy.

To the OP, please dispose of your waste properly. If you don't want to compost it, find someone who will.

The Council confirmed that I am not permitted to burn the leaves so I won't be burning them. End of.

Fatphrog - this is not my waste. The trees are not on my land they belong to a private school behind me and they dump their leaves into my garden this time every year. I'm left to clean it up.
