RTÉ: "Third-level alumni encouraged to register for new Seanad constituency"

GDPR is also thrown about willy nilly, but it almost certainly applies here.

People probably never provided their personal data consenting to being alerted to a new Seanad constituency.
Why would consent be the legal basis for processing this data?

Article 7 GDPR.
OK, that doesn't tell me why a university would rely upon consent rather than one of the other more appropriate legal bases for processing this data. Assisting a graduate in exercising their democratic right does not need consent to process their data.

Edit: This is a perfect example of how GDPR is continually misinterpreted.

Is it not up to all qualifying graduates to inform themselves of their rights in this regard? Yes, the alumni associations and social media feeds of my alma maters have been mentioning, it is on national news sites, so much like the government appealing to everyone to register to vote for general/local/European elections, we should just go ahead and do it. Those that fail to register or vote lose their voice on the ballot.

Probably the big blocker for most is digging out their student ID! (though I can still remember mine :))

UL sent out a generic message as part of their newsletters for those who have signed up for it.

In fairness to the Universities, this is a pain. In my case, I am 30+ years out of the place, living in a completely different address and I would imagine, someone, somewhere, has to pull a box of records to find my file on it as I doubt a lot of that historic pre fancy computer systems records have ever been migrated to a more modern system

Seriously….how is DCU supposed to know with any precision where its graduates live four decades later?
They seem to have no problem when it comes to gatherings where the intention is fund raising of some description or keeping the uni in mind of past pupils who are high in the corporate ladder!

I am confused.

I got a ballot paper with people like Michael McDowell and Ronan Mullen on it and I filled it in and returned it immediately. That was the NUI constituency as far as I know for the soon to be appointed Senate.

What is this registration for? In case the Government collapses and there is another General Election and Senate Election this year?

As it is unlikely that there will be a General Election this year, then people who did not register will not have missed out.

Brendan

It's to get the new third level register (post-NUI and TCD only) ready in plenty of time, so that people do not miss out.

I am confused.

What is this registration for?
It's explained in the article that I linked to in the original post:
Alumni from more than 15 designated institutions are being encouraged to apply to be included in the first Register of Electors for the new Seanad Higher Education Constituency ahead of tomorrow's registration deadline.

The current arrangements, whereby three senators are elected by graduates of National University of Ireland (NUI) and three by graduates of the University of Dublin (Trinity College), will remain in place for the current Seanad General Election that is now under way.

However, graduates of technical universities, other universities and institutes of technology will, in future, elect all six senators as part of a newly established six-seat Higher Education Constituency.

Still closed:-

Welcome to SeanadVoter.ie This portal is currently closed for applications.

The portal will open shortly for additions to the 2026 Register of Electors.

The deadline for applications for the 2026 Seanad Register is 26 February 2026.

I have never used my vote on the NUI panel, on principle because I don't think it is right that graduates get an additional vote non available to non graduates. This is simply wrong in my opinion.
I agree, I got onto UCC and asked them to actively remove me from the register in December after decades of inaction. The post was all going to my parents house.
