Hi all, had the "pleasure" of an emergency root canal recently - €600 thank you very much. As far as I can ascertain it qualifies for tax relief. Am I right? Also, given I had it in 2011 do I need to claim in 2012 or now? Thanks in advance.

You should be able to claim for it, but I dont think you can do it until the tax year is over - so if you got it done in 2010, then you can claim in 2011 !

Root canal is on the revenue list of allowable expenses for tax relief. As the treatment was done in 2011 it will form part of the 2011 year end tax return.

Ensure that your dentist fills out a Med2 form for you, You can't claim for qualifying dental treatment without it.

You will get 120 back.

Dont forget to keep receipts for all GP, physio trips and prescription medication for the year, and make a claim early in 2012.

Thanks all, much appreciated. Getting back a few bob takes some of the pain out of it! Even if I have to wait a yr.
