Getting a quote today for a 60m squared dishevelled back garden. Is this stuff any use? It certainly saves time. Anyone any ideas?
 
I think it will work best if you prepare the ground (e.g. rotovate/dig it out) so that the grass can take. If the ground is very compatcted or full of rubble then it may just die off or get waterlogged etc. Of course if you're going to prepare the soil anyway then why not just save money and sow your own grass seed?
 
If I sow seeds, it will be months before there is a decent amount of grass. I would like the option of having a BBQ there before the summer ends (even though it looks like it already has !!). With the rolled lawn, they claim that after 2 weeks you can walk on it etc. Also, the rolled lawn apparently eliminates the need for extra topsoil, which I need. I have checked it out on google, but there is not much useful info.
 
When our estate was finished the builder put in rolls of grass and it only took where the earth had been properly prepared. Everywhere else it became very patchy and died off.
 
I got a rolled out lawn a couple of years back and looked after it like the landscaper recommended. It has never looked good and now, a few years later, actually looks a bit of a mess. Would not recommend - better off being a bit patient and waiting for the normal seeding to grow.
 
What about getting a roll of artificial turf to have the barbeque on this summer, seed in the autumn and by next spring you'll be right?
 
i did the ground preparation myself (dig by fork and rotovator to break it all up) picked all stones and raked to level/remove clods etc.. Then got roll out delivered from Summer Hill lawns and the lawn looks great - 3 years old now and no weeds apart from a few dandelions came through it. would definitely go for it.

also we had a party in house a few days after the lawn went down and it didn't damage it at all - just beware it needs lots of water in first few weeks, so if weather turns good and there are water restrictions you may be looking at your lwan dry out and wither (doesn't look likely at the mo!)

we didn't have the patience for waiting for grass to grow on it's own.
 
Got a quote from this NI crowd. €333 (incl. VAT @ 17.5 %) for a 60 m2 area. She says the quality is top class. Only need to get a landscaper to put it all down. I will turn it myself
 
Got some four years ago, prepared the ground, rotovated, raked, cleared stones. Still looks perfect, but I treat it twice yearly and fertilise monthly in the spring\summer.

can you finish this post ?

if you're preparing the soil yourself then put it down yourself - easier then doing a jigsaw - just roll out and tap sides to keep close to previous one - staggering the joints - easy !
 
I was going to ask a landscaper to put the rolls down. I could dig it up and prepare it for him in advance. I have read that any weeds need to be killed before the lawn is rolled? Or is there anither way?

They supply the grass to Croke Park also so you would imagine the quality would be pretty good from them.

Does that price include delivery?
 
There is a common misconception that you can lash this stuff down & you'll enjoy a lush green garden for years but the better preparation you carry out before laying and subsequent management of the rolled out lawn will improve results. Level and rotavate if needs be, remove large rocks etc. When the grass arrives give it plenty of water and avoid having trafffic on it. bit of Lawn feed & compost / fertiliser always helps. As Bricktop stated constant care will ensure its kept lush and green.

Not that simple, you have to use planks of timber to walk over the new lawn as you are laying it. If you walk straight on top of it a few things can happen...

1.) you will pull the sods apart leaving gaps between. This will mean it takes longer for the sods to nit together.

2.) Every footstep will leave a dent in the lawn. So in a few weeks after you put it down and want to give it it's first cut your lawn mower will be bouncing all over the place.

3.) you can rip the sod itself meaning you have to repair it.

I'm not saying your wrong Nai, there is just more to it than lashing it down.
 


If you sow your own seeds you will have grass in 2-3 weeks. Just water them regularly (on days when it's not raining). I put down seeds 10 days ago and have blade about an inch long already.

When will it be ready to walk on? If it will be fully ready in a week or so I might consider going your route
 
Rather then start a new Thread I thought I would add to this.
I had a bit of hill at the side of my garden and got a good bit of it dug out. The area is now very rough with a few stones etc which I need to clear. I am thinking of getting rolled grass from B&Q and putting it down.
Do I need to get some soil to put down first?
I was in B&Q last night and he said just to put fertilizer down is that all I would need. It is for an area about 5ft wide by about 20ft long.

The other areas are worn down as work was being done if I put down some grass seed there- should that recover?
