hi all,

Due to the large downpour of rain over the weekend my garden got pretty badly flooded. Heres the scanario, my house is suited about 20m from the main rd. The road level i would guess is about 6/7 ft higher than the threshold of my doorstep. My gate way is situated in a valley therefore all the run off of water from the road both left and right flows down the road to my gate and down my driveway to my front door.
Is it not the councils obligation to have sufficent drainage for the roads and not have flood water flowing onto my property. The house is suitated in the countryside and there is a lot of factors which result in this happening. What can i do about this as i dont want walking up the road both side and diverting the water into the adjoining feilds.. Any thoughts on the councils responsabilities or mine for that matter.
 
When was the house built?

Were any planning conditions placed in the application to cater for surface water run-off?

Were any drainage ditches into adjacent fields off the roadway blocked? (Blocking existing is illegal, making new drainage requires planning / agreement) Look for bags of cement dropped into open drains, an old trick.

Does your driveway opening to the road block a drainage ditch?

Did the roadway drain into the field before you built your house there?

Is the flooding a new phenomenon?

Do you insurers know?

No there is a large drain at the back of my property but there does not seem to be a direct line for surface water to this drain from road.

Does your driveway opening to the road block a drainage ditch? No, the driveway is in between 2 small hills and the front gate is the bottom of the valley so on these freak downpours the volume is so great that it floods the driveway.

Did the roadway drain into the field before you built your house there? Not sure but it may have down.

Is the flooding a new phenomenon? neighbours dont have the same problem.

Do you insurers know? no.

Would the co. council be worth a call on this? as i could put in a drain from road to drain at back of house but this now causes planning issues and may result in flooding further down the line???
