I was made redundant in 2008. When my employer was filling in my P45 , she made a mistake in the amount of tax that he said I had paid (She said i had paid more than I actually had). Therefore when i claimed my tax back on my p50, I was overpiad tax by the revenue. They have now wrote to me highlighting this mistake and stated that I will receive a balancing statment and have 30 days to repay the amount. How should i deal with this? Can i pay the amount back in instalments etc?

Thanks for your help

I was overpaid by Revenue before. My tax credits were adjusted (reduced) so that I will be repaying the amount over a four year period.

Thanks Gianni,

I am now working abroad. In the letter i received from the revenue it said that I will receive a balancing statement and that I will have 30 days to repay the overpayment. Is this standard?

The same happened to me David, The amount wasn't huge...about €500, so they took it in installments over the next 12 months. I suggest you ring them. They're actually very helpful.

I recommend you contact them and outline that you do not have the money to pay it back in one lump sum and that you are willing to pay x amount over y months. Revenue are normally very helpful but you will need to get the confirmation in writing as the people and the systems are not in tandem and you are likely to start receiving threatening reminders when teh 30 days are up.
