Replacement shower

Maybe a dumb question, but I want to replace a power shower and don't know if I should go straight to a plumber or go somewhere they sell showers.

If I buy the shower first will they recommend a plumber?

Or will a plumber recommend a shower?

All advice welcome.

What should I expect to pay, given that all the plumbing is already in place?

I would say go to a plumber! they generally know what they're talking about! they have more of a knowledge of what shower has had problems etc(as they would be the ones called back to replace or fix them!) They will give you solid advice and you will be charged 13.5%VAT if the plumber supplies and fits the appliance for you but if you are doing things seperately the VAT on the actual shower will be 21.5% and then the labour will be seperate! I would recommend plumber whole heartedly! Ohh and it's not a stupid question! PLus a plumber will have more knowledge of the workings of a shower that a sales person working the shop floor!(NOt saying that they aren't well up on their info too!!!!!!lol)

Some plumbers might even suggest you go in and choose a shower yourself and he'd put it on his account(presuming he has an account with the shower company!) and he would invoice you total at end!

You ask them to give you a quote for the work! ask for a break down of price if they don't give it to you. and shop around ask a few plumbers/builders for prices! you'll soon see who's rippin you ofF!
 
The plumber will be able to give you a price while he is at your home . The cheapest way is to get a direct replacement for the shower you have. It may be a newer model but connections will be the same.
 
Is the power shower unit built into the wall or wall mounted?
 
Dave is on the ball, though not all connections are the same they may need some adjustment. Also the board needs to be checked and may require minor upgrade.
Again as Davey rightly said, depends on how old shower is.
There is a difference between a "Power Shower" and a "Pumped Instant Shower" So be specific on the make and model when speaking to a supplier or Plumber.
A power shower only boosts the flow rate where as A pumped instant shower generates its own hot water while also pumping the water.
There are great deals availble from builders merchants on showers at the moment and you will same money by suppling the unit yourself.
There is a firm called shower doctor, they repair and recondition showers too,
you may not need a new shower if its just the heat exchanger, stat or the pump etc, but if its an old shower as in more that 10 years you may be better replacing it.
 
Thanks guys. It's a power shower as it draws hot water from the system. Doesn't heat the water. The unit is wall mounted - Triton, can't remember the model #.

It's 10 years old this year so I've got a reasonable life from it and reckon I'll probably just replace it. Sounds like direct replacement will be easiest.
