Replace Turbocharger on 98 Audi A4 1.9TDI 81KW

Have noticed that my 98 Audi A4 1.9TDI 81KW is down a bit on power and gives out occasional puff of black smoke from tailpipe. Suspect that the turbocharger may be on it's way out. Does anyone have any idea of the price to replace a turbo ? Can the turbo be reconditioned ?

Usually you are into serious money when the turbo charger is going or gone. A couple of grand at least and probably more (given its an Audi). Worse still, if you want to sell, it is one of the main things that a potential purchaser/garage will look out for. Turbo chargers are better than they used to be but are still a weak spot in reliability.

I have not heard of reconditioning.

It could be the airflow sensor these seem to have a tendency to fail and are easier and cheaper to replace than a turbo.

If the airflow sesnor is in trouble it can leave the car well down on power.

Easy for a garage to diagnose.

Was the airflow sensor. Cost about €150 to replace.
