Replace power shower with pumped?

Hi Folks,

We are gutting our bathroom soon. We have a working Triton T90 SI installed, it warms and pumps the shower water. Recently we upgraded our gas bolier, controls and flexibility to heat water/radiators separetly. As such we usually have a standard tank with plenty of hot water.

We intend on continuing to set our boiler to heat the water year round and are considering removing our Triton and replacing with a pumped thermostatic shower using the hot water from the tank.

Our plumping costs will be minimal as a friend is doing the job.

What are the thought on initial cost and general running costs of pumped versus Triton type. The concerns I have are cost, noise, pump rate/flow using all the water in the tank.

Given the cost we want to get this right and not have to redo for many years!

Household is two adults our baby and maybe another baby next year?

Thanks,
MAJJ

Noise from a pump? Yes, well there is from ours as the pump is in the hot press beside the main bathroom, but you get used to it and don't hear it when you are actually in the bathroom.

Pressure is fantastic, but that depends on the strength of the pump. Running costs? Sorry, can't help you there as always used a pumped shower from the hot water in the cylinder heated by the gfch. Don't forget though, that once the cylinder has emptied after one or at best two showers, it needs to heat up again. That's where the Triton types are great.

Still, if you are going to use the water heated by your heating system, it seems daft to instal a Triton which AFAIK uses the cold water feed and heats it as it flows into the shower.

If you have more than one bathroom, I would put a pumped one and a Triton type in each. Just in case.

Pumps do generate a bit of noise but I think you get used to it after time. The pressure they can generate is great though.

Majj,

I would go for it, we have a shower pump in our hot press for 3 bathrooms for almost 2 years and I would not be without it, the pressure is great. I LOVE the pumped shower, I miss it when we go away!
I have noticed no difference in running costs.

You do notice that is goes through a lot of hot water so you need a good supply, we had our emersion on a timer (or central heating heats the water in the winter) but what we've done for the last year is leave the emersion on 24/7 and it has not increased the electricity bills, in fact it probably reduced it a little because it's topping up the tank when it needs it, rather than sometimes letting a hot tank go cold and heating it up again. We did it first as an experiment as a friend of mine was telling me for years this was the way to go, and it does seem to be more efficient than the ay we worked it previously. (I know, John Gormley will be on his bike now to come and strangle me :D)

sorry, forgot to say, yes the pump is noisy, but you do get used to it and I wouldn't discount it on that front,

Hey Folks, thanks for all the comments and info. plenty to mull over. BTW, this is our sole bathroom/shower :)
