Replace old fireplace

I bought a house about 2 yearws ago no and the fireplace is one of the old tiled ones. Some of the tiles have fallen off. I hate it and want to replace it but fireplaces are so expensive. Does anyone know of a cheap but long lasting method to update a fireplace. It's a smallish sitting room 15ft x 13ft and oddly shaped. I was thinking of maybe installing a sleeper mantlepiece and just plastering around the fireplace. Any ideas or suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

If you can replace the tiles that have fallen off, just use tile paint to update it until you can afford to replace the whole thing. It's a cheap & easy solution until you figure out what you want to do and it wil greatly improve the look of the room
