My sis is moving into her new home soon. It is around 15 years old. Most of the inbuilt presses in the kitchen and wardrobes in the bedrooms are in good condition, but the doors of both she would like to replace...some are well worn with missing handles etc. and they look unsightly.

Is this possible? Has anyone any ideas how this could be done?

Yes this is possible. Most if not all kitchen/bedroom suppliers will supply new doors for the kitchen and wardrobes and leave the existing carcuss. They should also fit them for you aswell.

Thanks. I will start my hunt there.

measure the units first! alot of older units would be in imperial measurements,( i now we went metric in the seventies but i still meet people who use feet and inches). where you can get caught out is with the wall units that are 610mm high (24") whereas the nearest std door is 570mm. also check the widths of the doors. you'll find some of the larger doors not to be 595mm, which is the std now, but to be 575mm which you wont get. Yes you can cut the doors down but if you go for high gloss doors they are only mdf inside so the difficulty is in re-edging them with a matching edging. if you cut down soilid doors make sure you leave enough on the stile (door side) so as to re bore for hinges.kitchen door std heights are 570mm 710mm and 900mm high widths are 295,345,395,445,495,595. ward robe heights are mostly 2250 high though you can get doors 2275high in Softline in cherry orchard and the pannelling ctr do some of their ranges at 2150mm high the widths would be the same as for the kitchens. most times its more economical to change the wall units. another thing to consider is if you change the colour of the doors you may have to change the blend panels and kickers as well to match

Related to that are the places that will refinish the doors of kitchen units, like sand and revarnish etc.

There are a few previous threads on this subject. Some of them might have recommendations as there can be a big differences in price from one supplier to another. I found the handles can vary in price a lot also.

Gebbel, a few years ago my brother in same situation painted the doors and popped on new handles and completely tranformed the units, vthe doors had been timber and he painted them cream so they looked amazingly modern and new and not like the old fashioned doors at all, have a think about it. Depending on type of door you may need to spray paint rather than brush, he managed to do his with the brush and they looked fab.

I recently replaced all my wardrobe doors with new ones, made to measure and came pre primed white 22m thick mdf. PM me if you are interested in getting the details of the guy who did the work.

Same reason I don't want a zillion text messages telling me,I've won a million euro and all I've got to do its ring this premium number, or that Zing Zang Zo, has great deals on iProds, or that I can chat to Mary Lou and shes wants a party.

Like hippy1975 we had a kitchen that we didnt like, in our case a fairly new one (basic B&Q beech look shaker style). Over Easter this year we also painted it all cream, some new handles and are delighted all for less than 200 euro all in. Took a few days but not difficult just a bit time consuming

Makes you wonder how advertising is a multi-billion industry so!
