Rental income tax - dodgy receipt

We had a roofer give a quote for €1k to fix the roof of a rental property we own. We hired him and he did a good job

We pay him and then ask him for a receipt (so we can offset the repair against tax we owe on our rent intake).
He says no we can't have a receipt as that was a cash price and wouldn't be worth his while to put it through the books.

We argued for a bit and eventually he agreed and posted us a receipt. (he did try and get more money from us but backed down)

I dont think its a valid receipt and he has made up details on it. Where do I stand here ?
If I get audited when I submit my tax return and this turns out to be a mickey mouse receipt is it me who is in trouble ?

Can I check VAT numbers on-line somewhere ?

Do I need to verify that every receipt I want to offset against tax is legit or whats the story in regards to this ?

Thanks

Thanks, thats very useful (just used against another receipt and it worked). I'll check tonight.

If it is a false VAT number or doesn't relate to his business where does that leave me ?

If it is in doubt am I just safer leaving it out of my returns - ignorance is no excuse in the eyes of revenue ?

If a supplier tries to decieve you or the Revenue, its their problem, not yours. Keep a record of their contact details in case of a query arising in the future. Maybe it might be an idea to take photos of the finished work and keep them on record also. Otherwise I wouldn't worry too much about it.

ps the VAT verification site doesnt confirm the identity of the business holding the VAT number quoted. It merely confirms whether the number quoted is valid.

Also he might not necessarily be registered for VAT, although it would be unusual.
