I am looking to apply for rent allowance. Im renting a room in an apartment i share with one other tenant but I worried my application will be denied because the landlord is my father. Will there be a problem or does this matter?

Yes, your application may be refused because you're renting from your father. It will be treated as if you were living at home (persons living at home can't qualify for Rent Supplement).

Just curious, at what stage are we NOT responsible for our children?
what age do they have to be for the social welfare not to take their parents income into account? Do they have to leave home to be independent?

it's obviously a very sensible anti-fraud measure from SW, not saying this is the case with the OP but what's to stop the landlord/parent refunding all the rent to the tenant, how would SW be able to find out?

I think you can - looks like the OP is living in an apartment owned by his father , not living at home - am I correct??

I rented a flat off my mother for 2 years. Paid below market rent to be fair - only €300 a month. But was very clear on what I paid and who to and Revenue had no problem with it. My mother was totally above board too of course, and had declared it on her side for tax purposes.

Sorry - thought you were talking about rent relief for tax purposes. Rent allowance is of course a different thing - can;t imagine it would be permitted.

I know someone who rented from her father and got rent allowance about 5 years ago. It was all above board in that SW were informed of the situation.

At the time they told her it was unusual but still paid out. I think her father had to produce some sort of documentation for revenue to prove that he was paying tax on the income.

it is all above board. My father wants to sell the apartment but as no one is buying at the moment renting is the next best thing. I can see how it might be difficult but I am in my twenties and so my father has no obligations to help me financially, it is just good for him to know who is renting off him.

Your father owns a second home and you are looking to take money from the exchequer to hand to him? Why don't you just rent elsewhere? If it is so much hassle couldn't you just rent elsewhere and let someone else rent his room, and then everything will be okay. It won't get complicated.

Which part of the set-up do you have a problem with?
The father will receive rent no matter who the tennant is.
The son/daughter will pay rent and receive allowance no matter who the landlord is.
